For SaaS teams asked to "be in the ETL catalog"
Connector TaxA source connector is a cost center bought for distribution and deflection - no platform pays you for it.
Paste the demand evidence and the API resources you would expose, and answer a short interview. Your browser gates the demand, reads the platform from where customers' stacks run, ranks the build paths by who absorbs the maintenance tax, audits every resource for extraction readiness, drafts honest sync wording instead of a CDC badge and sizes the upkeep. Then the strategy, and the business case.

How it works - and what is sourced
The paths follow the skill. The platform-managed listing is the default - the platform absorbs the upkeep, you give up control of scope and cadence. The vendor-SDK connector wins when demand justifies standing engineering, the queue rejected the source or the schema is too dynamic. The custom connector carries 100% of the tax and the decay risk, and leads only when no platform covers the need or the customers who matter run open-source taps. A hard deadline promotes the queue; a compounding mandate with a funded team promotes the SDK.
No build is approved on a hypothesis. Every resource in scope needs a stable cursor, a backfill path, a delete signal, 429 with Retry-After and versioning with sunset dates - or an exclusion note. A public API never gets log-based CDC: customers read incremental sync, the poll interval, eventual consistency and what polling misses. Upkeep runs 15-30% of the build a year per connector, and no platform pays a revenue share.
